Every Web Hosting Provider offers you a multitude of options, and if you’re new to the game of Hosting a Website, this can be a daunting task in knowing which options to choose from. I have often come accross people that are paying too much for what they’re actually doing with their website. If you don’t use a database, why pay for it ?

Knowing what each option is for, can really save you from paying more than what you really need to pay.

HTML: Websites are written in a language called HTML, and this is the basic function that every Web Host offers you - without HTML, there is no web site.

HTML code tells the web server what the website should look like, where to load the images, and the links to other pages. HTML isn’t really difficult, and is fairly easy to pick-up. To learn more about HTML you can go to http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp which has some great tutorials on HTML. You can also use tools like Front Page and Dreamweaver to build pages,but having a basic knowledge of HTML can only help.

DISK SPACE: The size of the disk space is important if you’re going to have a big website with lots of pages. This is where your pages get stored, and you need space for them. I always like to start small, and then upgrade as my requirements grow.

BANDWIDTH: When ever somebody visits your website, information is being transferred from your website to their web browser. This transfer creates traffic that is and this traffic is measured as Bandwidth. As with diskspace you can usually upgrade this as needed. I have found that it’s better to go with a webhost that charges you extra whenever you go over the allocated amount as this usually ensures that your website stays up and running even if it costs you a bit extra.

PHP/ASP/CGI: Allows you to write various scripts into your website that does little extras that HTML cannot do on it’s own - Anything from allowing people to make comments on your website to creating full member areas. If you want a website that allows people to interact with your website, then you most probably will need some form of Scripting. There are alot of free scripts out there, with PHP being the most popular. It’s important to first know what scripts your website’s going to be running, before going for a webhost - as not all webhosts offer every type of scripting solution out there.

DATABASES: If you want to store hugh amounts of data to make available to your visitors, or run a content management system like Joomla, then you’ll need a database for this. You also need a way to get the data in and out of the Database, so you’ll need PHP as well - But, most web hosting companies will give you both options bundled together.

CONTROL PANEL: There are various control panels that web hosting providers use, and they all perform the same function - allowing you to control your website. I have no real preferance for any specific control panel, as they pretty much all do the same thing.

DOMAINS: Most Webhost providers will register a domain for you at a extra cost. Be sure to check out registrars of domains, to see if you cannot buy it for cheaper. Registering a domain at something like Go-Daddy.com is pretty cheap, and pretty easy to do. What makes it sometimes better to go via the hosting company is that they will manage the whole aspect of the domain for you, where with a service like Go-Daddy it’s up to you to manage the whole domain - So, it’s sometime a cost saving option to go with the Web Host.

A lot of these options you can add to your website as you need them. It’s not always best to go for the most expensive package out there. Find out what you need, and then only purchase those options you need. You can save yourself some real money at the end of the day.

In the time that I have been using the Internet, (since 1996) I have seen a lot of websites. I have seen a lot of good websites and I have seen a lot that were just plain awful. Here are some things to think about before you start a website.


What is the purpose of your website? Is it meant to be primarily a sales site or is it meant to be purely informative?


Once you have decided on your website’s purpose, you need to decide on a theme. There is nothing worse than going to a website and having to play guess what this website is about. To pick a theme, I suggest that you write down a list of things that you are interested in and/or knowledgeable about.


Once you have written your list down, you need to do some research. Use a tool such as the search term suggestion tool on overture to see if there is a demand for your topic. If you type in your topic and see a lot of searches done for your topic then you should use that topic. If you don’t see a lot of searches done for your particular topic, try another one.


Now that you have picked a topic that is in high demand, you need to either develop a product that fits the theme of your site or find a product to sell that fits within the theme of your site.


You also need some sort of freebie to offer on your site so that you can build your own opt-in list for marketing purposes. You should offer an ebook or a special report. Maybe even offer an e-course. Whatever you offer, make sure that you have a way of capturing the email addresses of your visitors. These people will become your “warm market” or people that you can market your other offers to.


You will need to find a hosting company to host your site. Free Web space is fine for just casual websites, but if you are serious about making money online you should eventually graduate to a paid host. The reason behind this is that many people perceive a site hosted on a free web space to be unprofessional. I don’t agree with these people myself, but you do have to deal with what the majority thinks in this industry.


You also need your own domain name. See the above tip.


You will need to code your site. You can either learn how to do this yourself or you can hire someone to do it for you. The amount of money you have to spend on this endeavor should help you to decide whether or not you want to hire someone.


Lastly, you need to figure out how you are going to promote your site. Here are some suggestions:
writing free articles for reprint in ezines and on websites.
buying advertising in ezines
buying advertising on websites
trading links with relevant sites.
This is by no means an exhaustive list of things to think about when starting a website. This article’s purpose is just to get you started. You should certainly read everything you can find about doing business online while you are building your business.

You want to know how to turn your web site into a successful sales tool. You hunt for articles much like the one you’re reading right now that will give you the secret recipe for success. Well I’m here to burst your bubble. There is no secret ingredient for instant success… but there is for instant failure.

Here are three points to keep in mind when creating the content of your website. They apply to every website in every industry.

Avoid Clichés

I recently read an article about big business advertising that put it perfectly, “Trite business clichés are the comfort food of Corporate America and, of course, it tends to overindulge.”
With so many websites and so many services offered on the web how will you differentiate? Using unoriginal, tired clichés is one of the easiest ways to get people to run away from your website for two particular reasons:

1) Overuse leads to boredom. You’ve read “think outside the box” so often that it’d almost be unique if a company stated, “we think inside the box”. At least it’s something you’d remember.

2) Clichés lead to skepticism. “Act now for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!!” “Fool proof method to make you millions… in 3 hours or less!!” People are generally weary of business on the Internet as it is and these kinds of statements immediately scream “SCAM”. Sell your products and services for what they are and instill confidence in your buyer.

Get to the Point

If a visitor can’t tell what you’re selling in 10 seconds or less well then you might as well just say goodbye to that potential sale. It really is that simple.
However, I’m not suggesting you put every piece of information about your product or service on your homepage, in fact I’d strongly recommend against that, but you must give the visitor an idea of what your site is about right away. You cannot create a mysterious draw for a consumer on the Internet the same way you might be able to, in say, a mall.

Overdoing It

The number one mistake most people make when designing their own website is overdoing it. Less is most definitely more when it comes to web design. Various color schemes, flashy graphics, frames, background images etc. all have a time and place… just not all the time and all over the place. Too many graphic tricks will make your site look tacky and worst of all will slow the download speed to prohibitive levels.

I’ll often read articles that list the top 10 “must-dos” for web site success and each time I walk away thinking that some of the points are just too technical for the reader and what’s worse is that they don’t touch on the core principles of Internet sales. No matter what industry you’re in you have to give the customers what they want. In the case of Internet businesses people want reliable information and straightforward answers… and they want them right away.

If you do in fact decide to design your own website keep these points in mind. Read through your site combing for tired clichés, excessive graphics, and unnecessary terms and phrases. This inspection will go a long way to building a successful internet business.

You have only 10 seconds to impress your potential buyer.


Your Web site visitors don’t care about you. They care what you can do for them. Give them a reason to buy. If you haven’t reaped the sales you deserve apply these ten tips:


1. Write dazzling home-page copy that gives your potential customers a reason to click to your product or service sales letter.


Use hyper-linked benefit driven headlines that lead visitors straight through to a sales letter that includes bulleted benefits of your service or product. “Before I learned this ultimate power technique, my Web sales were flat.”


2. Preplan and know your Web site’s purpose and audience before you contact a Web Master.


Without knowing your site’s clear purpose, your headlines and copy for each product or service will lack clicking power. If your visitors don’t get a chance to know why they should use you or your product, they will be confused and leave your Web site.


Before you write much copy, make a list of your benefits and features. Your visitors want to know what their outcomes are for reading your book. Benefits sell. Use this list to create an order-pulling sales letter and headlines.


You must also know your audience before you write a word of Web copy. To preplan your Web site, write out an audience profile. Think of income, age, sex, Internet savvy, how they spend discretionary money.


Make another list of your audience’s resistances. Later apply to your sales letter where you put them up, then answer them. If you offer a book, make sure you compel your visitor to go to your sales and order page. Always make it easy for them to buy.


Maybe you are like me, when you visit other professional sites; you often leave wondering what are they selling? What do they want the visitor to do?


3. Sell your products and services through brave, bold, headings.


Headings can ask a pertinent question about you visitors challenges, such as “Are your web sales puny?” Or, “Are you frustrated not being in the career you love? Headings can use a benefit statement such as Quadruple your Success (you name what it is) with one feature it works with, such as the Online Promotion Tool Kit (name your product or service).


4. Use sparkling testimonials from the rich and famous on your home page and all other pages about each product or service you offer.


Place your best testimonial with at least three benefits in it near the top of your home page. Rather than put all testimonials on just one page, sprinkle them generously throughout your site.


An excellent testimonial can become the hyperlink that sends your visitor to your sales message. Even on your order page, include a testimonial at the top of your listing.

One link from a famous coach said, “Save yourself from headaches, disappointments and money down the drain. Read this short eBook on book writing and publishing before you write another word!”


You may already have testimonials on your Web site for your product and service, but do you have them for your ezine, fre.e articles, and teleclasses?


5. Support your home page “Passion Approach” copy with proper links to product sales letters, stories, and service.


Let’s say you have a bold heading “Quadruple your Web sales in Four Months with Opt-In Ezine Articles.” You can make the whole phrase a hyperlink that with one touch, will lead your visitors where you want them to go–To your sales letter, of course!
